Breaking Bad Habits: Why The Changes You Make Never Seem To Last

Updated: Oct 18

Change is hard. We all know that.

Most of the time, you start strong, but somewhere along the way, it fades.

You may think of change as a simple two-step process: decide to change, then change. But it's not that simple. In reality, change is a complex journey with multiple stages, each needing its own kind of support.

Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Pre-contemplation.

This is when you don't even realize you have a problem. You're in denial, rationalizing your behavior. "Everyone's in debt," you might say, ignoring your overspending.

  1. Contemplation.

You know there's a problem, but you're not sure if you want to change. You might say, "I know I spend too much, but shopping helps me deal with stress."

  1. Preparation.

You've decided to change but don't know how. You're looking for strategies, information or a game plan.

  1. Action.

You're actively changing your behavior, but it feels challenging and uncomfortable. You need confidence to keep going.

  1. Maintenance.

You've made the change, but now you need to stick with it. This stage is tricky because complacency can set in.

Understanding these stages is crucial because each one requires different types of support. In pre-contemplation, we need awareness. In contemplation, we need motivation. In preparation, we need strategies. In action, we need confidence. In maintenance, we need to avoid complacency.

Recognizing where you are in this process can help you give yourself what you need to move forward. It can also help you be more patient with yourself.

Progress isn't always linear. Sometimes, we move back and forth between stages, and that's okay. What matters is that you keep trying.

If you're struggling with change, watch this video for real insights and guidance on making lasting progress—no shortcuts, just what works for you.
